#1 The Ark - Plans for the Tabernacle

The Ark of the Covenant Bible Study As modern-day readers of the Bible, we tend to skim over the detailed and often tedious texts of the Old Testament and focus instead on the simpler sections of the New Testament. It is tempting to overlook the significance of the 50 chapters in the Books of Moses devoted to the tabernacle and may think them irrelevant or boring. After all, how were all those detailed plans for a 15 th century B.C. comparable to be useful to Christians in the 21 st century? Just like Jesus’ parables served to illustrate and bring His teachings to life, the Old Testament visuals serve to illuminate many spiritual concepts in the New Testament Many scholars have observed that almost all expressions pictured in describing the significance of the tabernacle are also used in reference to heaven. That is because the earthly tabernacle was patterned after the one in heaven (Exodus 25:9, 40; 26:30; 27:8; Numbers 8:4; Acts 7:44; Hebrews 8:1-5; 9:11-12). ...

#2 The Ark - Plans for the Altar

Exodus 27:1-5 Plans for the altar And you shall make an altar using shittim wood, construct a square altar 7 1⁄2 feet wide, 7 1⁄2 feet long, and 4 1⁄2 feet high. Make horns for each of its four corners so that the horns and altar are all one piece. Overlay the altar with brass. Make ash buckets, shovels, basins, meat forks, and firepans, all of brass. Make a brass grating for it, and attach four brass rings at its four corners. Install the grating halfway down the side of the altar, under the ledge. For carrying the altar, make poles from shittim wood, and overlay them with brass.   Insert the poles through the rings on the two sides of the altar. The altar must be hollow, made from planks. Build it just as you were shown on the mountain. The altar was the place for burning animal sacrifices. It showed the Israelites that the first step for sinful man to approach a holy God was to be cleansed by the blood of an innocent creature. For a sin offering, a person had t...

#3 The Ark - Duties of the Priest

Leviticus 16 atonement for sins performed by the high priest (1-2) how aaron should not come into the holy place Now the LORD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they offered strange fire before the LORD, and died; and the LORD said to Moses: "Tell Aaron your brother not to come at just any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud above the mercy seat." Aaron's sons, Nadab and Abihu were struck down by the LORD because they came into the Holy Place and offered strange fire before the LORD (Leviticus 10). Therefore, Aaron could not come into the Holy Place any time he pleased, but only at God’s invitation. The same is true today. We can only come to God’s Holy Place at His invitation. “No man come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:44) (3–5) What Aaron needs to...
