The Ark of the Covenant Bible Study | David Moves the Ark
1 CHRONICLES 13
David Attempts to Move the Ark of God
David said to all the congregation of Israel, “If it seems good to you, and if it is of the LORD our God, let us send word to our brethren everywhere… and let us bring back the Ark of our God to us, for we did not seek it in the days of Saul.”
All the people agreed, for they believed it was the right thing to do.
So David gathered all Israel together to bring the Ark of God back from Kiriath-jearim. David and all Israel went to Baalah (Kiriath-jearim), to bring up the Ark of God the LORD, who dwells between the cherubim.
A Good Desire, But the Wrong Way
They carried the Ark of God on a new cart from the house of Abinadab. Uzzah and Ahio guided the cart.
David and all Israel celebrated before God with all their might—singing and playing instruments. But when they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the Ark. Then the anger of the LORD was aroused against Uzzah, and He struck him because he put his hand to the Ark—and he died there before God.
David’s Reaction
David was distressed because the LORD had broken out against Uzzah, and that place was called Perez-uzza (“outbreak against Uzzah”). David became afraid of God that day and said, “How can I bring the Ark of God to me?”
So David did not bring the Ark into the City of David, but took it instead to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
The Ark remained there for three months, and the LORD blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that he had.
Good Intentions Are Not Enough.
David had the right desire:
· To bring back the Ark
· To restore God’s presence
But he did not follow God’s instructions—Good intentions do not replace obedience.
God’s Instructions Matter
God had already given clear instructions:
- The Ark was to be carried by Levites
- It was to be borne on poles
- It was never to be placed on a cart
- It was never to be touched
- (See Numbers 4:15)
Uzzah’s action, though it seemed right in the moment, was a direct violation of God’s command.
Familiarity Can Lead to Irreverence
Uzzah had likely been around the Ark for many years in his father’s house.
Because of this:
- He became familiar
- He may have lost reverence
- He forgot the holiness it represented
This is a powerful warning: —We can become too familiar with holy things and lose our reverence for God
Obedience Brings Blessing
While Uzzah faced judgment, the house of Obed-edom was blessed. Why?
Because the Ark was received properly.
This shows—God’s presence brings blessing when honored rightly
Connection to Christ
Through Jesus Christ:
- We are given access to God
- But we are still called to approach Him with reverence
- Grace does not remove God’s holiness
Final Truth
David asked, “How can I bring the Ark of God to me?”
The answer is—Only in the way God has commanded
